debate, vice presidential debate against joe biden and i know you have been watching tapes of joe biden and i know you will play the expectation game and say he's the greatest debater, since... i don't want to hear that. what i do want to hear is, you are a football fan and watch tapes, games, what are his techniques and tricks? what are his... >> he's fast on the cuff. he's a witty guy. he knows who he is and he has been doing it for 40 years. so, you are not going to rattle joe biden. joe biden has been on the national stage, ran for president twice, a sitting vice president. what i hope to achieve is to give people an alternative. a very different governing philosophy, different policies, and, joe is very good on the attack. joe is very good, at trying to confuse the issues. so, that the person who leaves the debate is not confused about who strands fands for what. >> chris: you have ted olson, supreme court appellate lawyer, respected in the country, and won bush versus gore as your standin. >> ted olson is one good debater and i hope joe biden shows up more than ted olson, he's one

at tomorrow night's debate, wolf. >> we'll have a lot more on what joe biden has just said and the very tough reaction coming in from the romney campaign. gloria borger is standing by on that front. both of these campaigns are bringing major surrogates to denver to appear in the so-called spin room after the debate tomorrow night. what are you learning about the romney campaign's people who are coming in? >> reporter: wolf, it's probably no surprise rob portman, mitt romney's chief sparring partner playing barack obama in the debate, he'll be in the spin room. but we've also learned that marco rubio, the rising star, senator from florida who had a prominent role at the republican convention, he will also be in the room. it's interesting to note this comes just as mitt romney's making some new gestures in some outreach, you could say, to the latino community. notable he will be there as well. >> very interesting. thanks very, very much, jim acosta in littleton, colorado. >>> all right. this just coming in to cnn. the results of our brand new poll among latinos all over the united states. certa

but the following week you have the vice presidential debate of joe biden. i know you will play the expectations game and say he is the greater debater since daniel webster. >> chris: want me to. >> want me to start now? >> chris: you are football game. you watch tapes. what are his techniques and threats. >> he is fast on the cuff. a witty guy. he knows who he is. and he he has been doing this for 40 years. you are not going to rattle joe biden. he has been on the national stage. ran for president twice. the sitting vice president. what i hope to achieve is to give people an alternative and different governing policy and different poll philosophies. joe is good on the attack and and confuses the issues. my job is to make sure that they are not confused about what we stand for and what they stand for. >> chris: ted olson, the guy who won bush v. gore as your stand in. what are the similarities between ted olson and joe biden? >> they are are about the same age and ted olson is one really good debater. i hope joe biden shows more than ted olson because he is one of the best litigators in america.

to be the words of the distinguished vice president of the united states, mr. joe biden. no, don't boo. he's the best thing we got going, guys. >> and how's this for trail mix? mitt romney got more than he bargained for when he posed at chipotle after ordering a burrito bowl in a photo op that's an internet sensation. good day, andrea mitchell live in denver at the site of tonight's presidential debate, the first time in five years that barack obama and mitt romney are going to be face-to-face in what the local newspaper is headlining as the duel in denver. joining me now for our daily fix, chris cizilla, msnbc contributor and managing editor of post politics.com. first of all, this, the big face-off, let's talk about the state of the race. we have new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll numbers showing a slight tightening in the race. fou looks as though mitt romney is in the national polls slightly narrowing the gap. other problems within those numbers, problems for romney. >> yeah. i mean first of all let me say i love duel in denver. i'm a big fan of that one. i think andrea, look, las

changer. and jared bernstein, msnbc contributor and former chief economist for vice president joe biden. bb, let me start with you. what are your thoughts? >> first of all, romney won a victory that was a victory of performance art built on a whole set of lies. i think people have counted up to 28 to 30 lies. and i actually think the president deserves some credit for at a couple of critical points holding romney accountable. it's a big victory to get romney to own voucher care as a replacement for medicare and the president also took romney on when he said no one over 65 will be affected because of the rebeautiful obamacare in fact as the president pointed out, seniorses will pay $600 more for prescription drugs and the medicare trust if you said will expire eight years sooner. secondly the president talked straight to 50 and 55-year-olds and said do you really want to replace medded care with voucher care? romney is now lashed to the idea. >> he definitely did. jared, let me go into the facts about the $5 trillion tax plan that romney all of a sudden got amnesia about last night. the

's obviously a whole realm of possibilities for misstatements and missteps. today joe biden said something that's getting a lot of play on the right. take a listen to this. >> how they can justify -- how they can justify raising taxes on the middle class has been buried the last four years, how in lord's name can they justify raising their taxes? >> jennifer: so biden of course supposed to help with white middle class voters. his comments about the middle class being buried were -- he was talking about romney's plans to raise taxes on the middle class. but the right and their surrogates are out having press conferences about this right now, probably as we speak. is that kind of going to hurt? >> actually, i think if you ask the voters, i think joe biden proved what's great about joe biden. he gets it. he's in touch. you know what? 80% of the voters agree. this economy has been bad. people have been buried. that's why they want to elect a president and a vice president who get it. who are in touch and will have

. only 30% want the welfare state. >> and republicans are seizing on what vice president joe biden said at a campaign event in north carolina. that set off another war of words. >> how they can justify raiding taxes on the middle class that has been buried the last four years. >> vice president biden just today said that the middle class over the last four years has been "buried." we agree. >> let's bring in the news nation political panel, associate editor and columnist for the "washington post" and msnbc analyst eugene robinson, abby stoddard, columnist for the hill, michael spir mitt romney is con nish, talk show host and chip saltzman, strategist. i would like to start off with you, is it fair to compare the two tape you the president's tape the conservatives were talking about since last night and the video of congressman ryan saying you 30% of people want to live their lives on welfare is it fair to compare these tapes, especially given the president's tape, then-senator obama, was covered by the media then? >> it a beautiful day in denver today, tamron. first of all. >> nice weat

headlines right now, vice president joe biden is on the campaign trail in the critical swing state of florida. as we mentioned a few moments ago. he talked about the gop ticket in ft. myers. >> what they're doing these days, if you notice, they're not talking anymore more about what paul ryan and governor romney are really for. they're spending an awful lot of time telling you what we, barack obama and joe biden are against and what we've done. and they just attack everything. >> the republican vice presidential candidate paul ryan also has a very busy day. congressman ryan is going to have a rally in ohio in just a couple of hours. more on that in just a moment. this morning, though, he was in derry, new hampshire. >> all these promises were made in the idea of hope and change. and people, it sounded pretty good. but when the rhetoric went aside and the time to act occurred, the ideas are the old ideas that have failed time and again. >> and as we speak, former senator rick santorum is also in ohio, getting ready to stomp for the romney campaign. he is appearing with ohio republic

the president is. you can't say the other thing is true about the other guy. joe biden made remarks ab the middle class being buried. here it is. >> vice president biden just today said that the middle class over the last four years has been, quote, buried. we agree. of course, the middle class has been buried. they are being buried by regulatio regulations, by taxes, by borrowing, they are being buried by the obama administration's economic failures. >> the romney campaign is taking remarks out of context. alex, will it work or is it just desperation? >> i think it's a real mistake whenever the romney campaign tries to play on the same field as the president and joe biden. nobody is a better surrogate, speaks more to the pain of the working and middle class than joe biden. don't even go there, paul ryan. that straight to camera shot, you saw both campaigns come out with ads. president obama is a much better speaker. he's more direct and communicates warmth and honesty. from mitt romney it seems hollow. if i were the romney campaign, i would stay with the fix it thing. do everything sh

're seniors. and i don't know. >> all right, everyone. listening to joe biden with the talking points there. he first went after representative paul ryan the gop vice-presidential candidate and his budget proposals. that said he's also going after medicare. given the demographic makeup of the sunshine state, which has a large already older population, it becomes no surprise that the latest polls show the president with a lead in the sunshine state. now at the same time paul ryan is campaigning himself in new hampshire today. the republican vice-presidential nominee met with voters in the city of derry just a short time ago. >> all these promises were made in the idea of hope and change. and people -- it sounded pretty good. but when the rhetoric went aside and the time to act occurred, the ideas are the old ideas that have failed time and again. >> as for mitt romney, he spent some time in pennsylvania on friday. and despite trailing the president as much as ten points in some polls, governor romney made this bold prediction. >> it is an honor to be here with you and to be here with these c

of debate can we expect there between joe biden and paul ryan? >> fii think if you ask a lot o republican folks, they're looking forward to this more so than presidential debate. they think they have a rock star in paul ryan. he'll have the opportunity to be fully unleashed in that 90-minute session with joe biden. one of the things he said to chris wallace today is he's not a line guy. he's not going to try to razzle-dazzle you with some line that sounds like it's been coined and in his back pocket for a month and a half. he's going to talk about the policies he and mitt romney want to put into play. he knows that vice president biden is going to come after him on his medicare and budget. >> how's he going to respond? >> they're ready. they want to be able to make the case to the american people that the real threat to medicare and its future is the president's affordable health care act, which they lovingly refer to as obamacare, and the fact that the president's plan extracts $716 million away to pay for that. what paul ryan isn't telling his supporters is that his budget proposal also

do. >>> the presidential candidates are prepping for tomorrow's big debate. joe biden in north carolina and paul ryan on a bus tour in iowa. last night he was in dubuque. the first time at a public campaign event he delivered this line. >> the choice is clear, and here is what we are doing. we are entering the debate phase, the choice phase of this campaign. this choice is ever so clear. >> speaking of choice, has mitt romney's choice of paul ryan paid off? let's ask republican strategist and former gingrich campaign senior advisor david winston and nbc latino contributor, a senior fellow at the university of texas. good morning to both of you. will mitt romney have to and be able to defend paul ryan's budget plan at the debate tomorrow? >> clearly, the selection of paul ryan was an intent to give, sort of fill out this alternative. how was mitt romney going to be an alternative to whatever president obama's policies were. that was a strategic shift from it being just simply a referendum on the president. it's not, it wasn't so much does he have to defend everything paul ryan d

the president and joe biden. nobodys a better surrogate, spe working and middle class than joe biden.ryan. that straighto camera sh, you saw th campaigns come out with ads. president obama isuch tt spker. he's more dict and communicates warh and honesty. from mitt romney it seems hollow. if i were e romney campaign, i woulstay with e fix it thing. everying ort ofoming out with mops and brooms and talkbout the ecomy. whever thetrine americttack, it never works for them. they fall flat and ialwa rings hollow. >> alex, richard, great to have th uyou wion "the ed show." >>> coming u the obama campaign reld a new ad hammering mitt romney for outsourcing jo to a chinese any nditions durg his time at sherrod n will be joining me on that d other issues. >>> and billioires are getting antsy about the possibility of president obama's reelecon. and th a starting to whine big time.you're watching "thed " >>> welcome back t"t ed show." anks for watchin they had invested in global tech. it's a chinese-based company less than two weeks after the companomoted i inexpenve lar and low tax rate. mitt

. as for vice president joe biden, he's using maryland representative chris van holland to stand in as ryan. the vp debate is set for october 11th in kentucky. >>> today the supreme court's new session begins. the nine justices will rule on several key cases, including where race should be a factor in college admissions. the court will also decide whether to curtail parts of the voting rights act of 1965. it requires the federal government oversee any election rule changes in states with a history of voting discrimination. also on the docket, whether the defense of marriage act is constitutional. it states the federal government will only recognize traditional marriages. >>> occupy d.c. is back, and it could cause some problems for your commute this morning. the group is planning to hold several demonstrations today to mark the one-year anniversary of that movement here. news 4's megan mcgrath live at farragut square now with more on what we can expect today. megan? >> reporter: good morning. we could see a pretty dicey rush hour this morning as well as some traffic tie-ups later on in the

towards mitt romney. i now think there is an enormous amount of pressure on joe biden next week as he goes into the debate with paul ryan. after that 2004 first debate debacle it was dick cheney. it will be interesting to see how this sets up. >> lawrence? >> governor o-mal mgovernor, yo candidate get up there. some people feel mitt romney dominated by bringing more energy to it. how did you see it? >> well, i think the president has always had a certain dignified reserve and i think that's one of the admirable qualities about the president. as i was watching the debate i think what mitt romney really needed tonight was a big game changer. he needed to address the observation that he hasn't had any specifics for all of these great promises. you know, $5 trillion in cuts but it won't add to the deficit, trust me i'll tell you later. eat cake, lose weight. so i don't think he got the game changer he needed tonight. i do think the president was particularly strong, though, in getting governor romney to admit that he does want to turn medicare into a voucher program and i also believe the pres

until november. >> my advice is for joe biden. do not try to overwhen sate by going in there charging like the bulls of pam plo na in your debate. the only thing that may be worse than an overly passive barack obama is an overly aggressive joe biden. >> a bull in a china shop maybe. >> maybe. listen, if he's hard to control when he's on script, just imagine him unscripted in a debate. >> but the american people still like him. >> yeah. >> still like him. >> he's a likable guy. >> he's a regular joe. >> i think all republicans should love him because he is the gift that keeps on giving. >> so is paul ryan to some extent. go ahead, governor. >> it's been exactly one year since steve jobs passing. and my unsolicited advice today is for all of the mavericks in america, all the people that walked against the crowd, all the people who disagree with everybody in the room, everybody in a classroom that says i don't agree with what's going on here today, the mavericks have made america great. if we lose our mavericks, we lose our edge. this is unsolicited advice for the mavericks, you keep it

'm concerned about the middle class. and middle class isn't doing very well. joe biden let it slip out the other day, they've been buried, buried under debt, buried out of work, buried with high gas prices, shovel ready senator? if you listen closely to the senator, you'll realize if you re-elect him, we're going to get more of the same, more taxes on the middle class and more peril for our children's future. america is in a crisis. if you can believe that we can do better as i do, that we can improve the lives for all of our citizens, put them back to work, and keep this american dream alive and well for our children, our grandchildren, you'll choose me. >> thank you. >> i wanted to thank everyone. look the middle class is under attack and that's why i have been fighting back. i led the charge to crack down on wall street's abusive practices. a championed targeted tax relief to the middle clafments those things that can help them be able to raise their families. my opponent votes for tax breaks for millionaires but against tax breaks for middle class. i help stop insurance from denyin

dodd, joe biden, outdebated barack obama in every single debate back in 2008. every single debate. chris dodd, joe biden, hillary clinton just ran circles around him. and people say, well, why can't he -- at some point you just have to say, because he doesn't have his -- i mean, a great of a grasp on the issues as the people he's debating. >> that's sobering but it's true. i still believe it's the professor. >> how can you be president of the united states, mark halperin, and, i mean, and not have these basic answers? >> well, it's more than i think the format than not having the answers. he spent a lot of the evening going after mitt romney for things that he thinks he can win the election on like taxes and medicare. it wasn't like he never responded to it. >> but isn't the format in washington is that you get in a room with someone and you go at it and you try and figure it out? >> that's what we're asking. has he been too isolated? listen, we talked to him. the guy is brilliant. he really is. but has he become so isolated there's not the back-and-forth with even democratic lead

government in our lives. >> we have taken the debates and broken into topic areas. joe biden is out campaigning in iowa. he talked about what he thought the president did last night. >> i thought the president did well. you never know what game that governor romney will come out with. the centerpiece of the economic policies so far has been tax cuts. last night we found out that he does not -- i guess the outdoors that to china -- outsourced that to china. i don't know. i think as time goes on, it will become pretty clear that the governor romney has changed a number of his positions are does not remember his positions. at the end of the day, we have bought two debates coming up for the president, and i feel real good about it. -- we have two the dates coming up for the president, and i feel real good about it. it is easy to say i would have done this or said that, but remember he was in front of many people. all debates are tough. i am looking forward to it. the thing with congressman ryan is that he has been straightforward up until now. there are significant changes he wants to m

at the capital hilton and one at a private home. he is sending joe biden off to florida for a little campaigning of his own. biden will take a new line of attack on republicans telling seniors romney's economic plan would force them to pay more taxes on social security, also romney -- all so romney can have more tax cuts for the rich. back with more bill. stay with us. decide the election. current tv presents coverage of the presidential debate. with unrivaled analysis and commentary. >> you're going to hear that used as a major talking point. for debate preparations. their debate is 11 days away, but vice president joe biden and romney running mate paul ryan are already mixing it up at a campaign stop in florida. the vice president said romney's economic plan would hit seniors with more taxes on their social security benefits. ryan fired back at a rally in ohio, accusing biden trying to scare people for political gain. >> joe biden himself voted to raise taxes on social security benefits and as a senator, president obama voted to keep those tax increases in place three times. i want to be very clear about this. mitt romney and i will never waiver in our commitment to our seniors. our plans actually saved these programs. >> biden and ryan's one and only debate is next thursday in kentucky. >>> and former republican presidential candidate rick santorum says mitt romney and republicans should support todd akin. he says an akin win is essential for the republican party to win control of the senate. akin is challenging claire mccaskill. he has been criticized after using the term "legitimate rape." our abundant natural gas is already

's just one of slate's awesome new political videos. also romney versus obama. videos of joe biden v. paul ryan. the battle royal still to come. spoofs are a fun way the digital age has changed the campaigns and also a serious impact. think about it. twitter was still relatively fledgling four years ago. tonight for the first time, instant reaction from the crowd could shape the national post-debate conversation. just as much as the opinions of journalists and pundits do. so, let's do what journalists and pundits do and talk about it. i think, you know, twitter and -- and i mentioned this yesterday in "the rant," i mean, twitter is a really fun way to watch a debate. live tweeting through it, see what other people have to say. but it's also really changed the sperngs. you know, as we tease there, you get instant reaction to real-time events. it's completely democraticized the experience of getting news and watching politics because everyone can be a pundit and a news producer by retweeting what other people are saying. and it develops these real-time twitter means we've seen throughout the

report and with us from waution, jared bernstein, former economist for joe biden. it's good to have you here. jared, i start with you. as we look at these numbers, is this a true game changer for the president? >> it certainly helps. i mean, this month's decline in the unemployment rate that you have been talking about from 8.1% down to 7.8%, that's the good kind of decline in unemployment because it came from a lot more people getting jobs. if you recall back last month, i was sitting in this chair telling you that the decline in unemployment from 8.3% to 8.1% was illusory. it tells you, as i said, more people came into the job market and got jobs. but it also tells you that the monthly surveys are volatile. however, i think there's other evidence in this report, perhaps we can get into it, that shows some momentum moving in the right direction. the pace of employment growth appears to be accelerating in the payroll survey as well. >> ron, i want to ask you about jack welch's tweet about the books basically being cooked. you know, he's a ge pioneer. we know him well around 30 rock. >>

that story. >> brian: joe biden, take another gaffe. >> you guys sit down if you have a seat. guyings, i didn't realize you didn't have seats, i apologize . my mother would kill me if a woman was standing this long. i apologize . >> brian: another instant biden classic coming to you and what he said later on is note worthy especially to paul ryan who will be debating him shortly . -- shortly. "fox and friends" starts right now. >> steve: so you were wearing pants all along? >> brian: i am not saying anything. >> gretchen: they are snap on. >> steve: as long as they are not snap offs . >> gretchen: we have a peek underneath. twitter me if you think brian bears boxers or brief. >> brian: you do have the answer. >> gretchen: maybe president obama wanted joe biden around, because it would have taken the attention off of a performance that many are saying that was not a good one by president obama. what do you do to try to get it back on track if you don't have joe biden out on the campaign. blame somebody, something, some way. here's what happened . >> governor romney may dance around the positio

together?" >> and that means compromise. >> there's the magic word. >> and this is the joe biden approach on behalf of obama when they have actually worked out some deals with congress, biden goes to the republicans and says, "okay, let's do it the old way. one for you, one for me; not just drawing the line, saying you've got to do it my way. >> i think you get koms promise because both sides have leverage. tax rates are going up on everyone by law. that's going to happen. so that gives leverage to the democrats. yet sequestration, what you mentioned bob, the automatic cuts, republicans hate the defense cutses. democrats hate the nondefense cuts. and then you have the treasury debt seale chicago gives leverage to whatever party doesn't win the presidential election. i think odds are pretty high we'll get an agreement. >> i think the best place for both sides to start is in education because i sit in a lot of conversations with republicans. i spend a lot of conversations with democrats, and they agree on a whole lot more than they disagree on. so it seems to me that both parties could come

happen to be the words of the distinguished vice president of the united states mr. joe biden. no, don't boo. he's the best thing we got going, guys. don't boo. because in a moment of clarity, in a brief moment of clarity he just told us what we already knew. >> reporter: romney's aides say they expect the president to call on the gop nominee to offer specifics. >> we're going to limit deductions. >> reporter: but in an interview with the denver tv station, romney began to do just that. >> well, you could do something for instance as an option you could say everybody's going to get up to a $17,000 deduction. and you can use your charitable deduction or home mortgage deduction or others, health care deduction and you can fill that bucket. if you have a $17,000 bucket that way and higher income people might have a lower number. >> reporter: as for all of that talk about zingers, the romney campaign officials did not exactly say they have a fun one-liners ready to go for tonight. but they did say it won't be difficult to challenge the president's record on the economy. translation, wolf,

obama and joe biden did is they endangered medicare. they stole money from medicare for amacare, and you see the ads in here and everything they say. nothing could be further from the truth. >> october 11, congressman paul ryan and vice president joe biden will face off in their only debate. abc news' martha raddatz moderates, and you can watch our live debate preview starting at 7:00 p.m. eastern, followed by the debate at 9:00. follow our live coverage on c- span, c-span radio, an online at c-span.org. >> up next, a look at the immediate impact last night's debate had on of voters. charlie cook talked this morning with a republican pollster and democratic pollster. this is about 90 minutes. >> morning, everybody. if i could invite you to take your seats, we are going to go ahead and get started. thank you for joining us live on this rather humid thursday. thank you to everybody joining us on the live stream on nationaljournal.com and those of you viewing and listening on a c-span2 and the voice of america. i'm the senior vice president of national journal, and it is a pleasure to welco
